It’s been quite a journey…

  • Every success story has to start somewhere… And for us it was in Alex, our MD’s, bedroom! A sports fanatic with a particular love of cricket he sees an opportunity to sell cricket bats to his friends and teachers at school, inadvertently breaching rules of no sales over £10.

  • 2003

  • Building on early success Alex expanded his enterprise to selling cricket products on eBay. Little did he know but 18 websites and Amazon would soon follow suit.

  • 2004

  • Being a less than gifted at cricket, Alex was keen to do anything to get his first half century Desperate measures called for a bowling machine! This required a cricket net which became, unbeknown at the time, the start of Net World Sports. Having found the ultimate home cricket net setup, Alex began selling this to other budding (substantially more gifted!) cricketers.

  • 2005

  • Having already begun to throw in the educational towel in, this continued at pace while in college. Being the only person to use all of his extra time in a general studies exam and still only get an E, it’s fair to say that Alex had completely checked out of learning by the traditional methods. However, in 2005 Alex began his first job as a “Saturday Lad” at a local builders’ merchants. A shy and timid 17 year old, but how things would soon change…

  • 2006

  • Life as a part time “Saturday Lad”, soon became full time “Saturday Lad” When short staffed, Alex’s boss would pay him double time to miss college and predictably he jumped at the chance. 7:30am starts, 10hr days, 62hr weeks, sweeping the yard in the pouring rain and changing toilet seats. It wasn’t easy, but in Alex’s own words, “I had no previous work experience, but they gave me a chance and it was the most beneficial thing I did. I met real people and I found out what the real world was like. When I started as I was a church mouse, when I finished I was doing everything”.

  • 2007

  • Spending his gap year working full time, Alex had amassed £13,000 in savings. The following year this would be put to good use…

  • 2008

  • Throwing caution to the wind, Alex spent all of his savings on an entire container of sports nets. Eager for the container to arrive before the peak selling season, Alex did away for the traditional need for samples and just went for it! It wasn’t all plain sailing though, as upon the container docking Alex was hit with a large unexpected VAT bill. He asked the bank for a 2 week overdraft. They requested a business plan (the only one he’s ever done) and infuriatingly said no way José. Thankfully Alex’s parents, Caroline and Per, were deemed more creditworthy and the required money was lent. Per finished the new shed just in time for the arrival of the container and from here began the theme of a solo mission. There was going to be no meaningful outside help, we were on our own.

  • By this point Per, Alex’s Dad, was helping fulltime 24-hour days became the norm as they did everything from sales to packing themselves.

  • 2009

  • Net World Sports Ltd was born Believing in the potential of the business and recognising the need for more space, Alex’s parents broke the bank once again and moved to a house with barns for storage. Momentum was building and by June sales hit what was at the time a huge £85,000 for the month. This was helped further when opportunistically, with only a “slight” exaggeration in parcel volumes, Alex got great shipping rates to Europe… with this export was born!

  • 2010

  • This was a hard year, but a defining year as sales in 2010 exceeded £1m for the first time. There was no looking back now.

  • 2011

  • Time for a new home It soon became apparent that container lorries and a quiet residential cul-de-sac weren’t going to mix too well and we took on the lease of a 25,000sq ft warehouse, giving us the space we needed for future growth. The move didn’t necessarily go without a hitch though as Alex was caught doing doughnuts in his BMW M3, just moments after the landlord had asked him not

  • 2011

  • Team games In 2011, it became a team game as we welcomed our first members of staff. In came Charlie, our now Operations Manager, who has the special accolade of being Net World Sports’ longest serving member of staff. Caroline, Alex’s Mum, made Net World Sports a full family business as she left her job as a University Lecturer to look after our burgeoning accounts.

  • 2012

  • Word was spreading fast And in true ‘win the business and worry about the details later’, Alex convinced an events company that Net World Sports should be the ones to supply Titans of Cricket at the 02 Arena. This was a huge undertaking made even harder as it morphed into a supply and install job. It was a textbook success as we got a close up view of legends Freddie Flintoff and Steve Harmison.

  • 2013

  • Changing football forever Our (soon to be) famous FORZA goals were born. Going into full-scale production was no mean feat, involving plastic extrusion, injection moulding, assembly lines, large amounts of patience, Captain FORZA himself (Charlie) and a lot of money. The gamble paid off, momentum continued and FORZA goal sales hit £3.6m in 2013. We were revolutionising how thousands of future superstars across the world enjoyed the beautiful game, but we weren’t ready to stop yet.

  • 2014

  • Things were beginning to really move at pace We were manufacturing 1,000 FORZA goals a week and were receiving calls from all over the world at all times of the day. We hired a Customer Care team devoted to providing the very best service for our ever-expanding number of customers. Saneca who started with us then now heads up the team and Sophie, who has since experienced many different departments, now leads our HR.

  • On the move… again After a couple of false starts we soon found a location with a big enough warehouse and office space. Bringing everything together on one site gave us the crucial control over customer experience and business efficiencies. Doubling the size of our location didn’t come without a massive commitment though; a 3 year lease, 50,000sq ft of space needing to be filled and a huge hike in rental costs – but it was needs must if we wanted to keep growing, so you can guess what was decided!

  • We had our first £1m month In December of this year. A huge milestone for Net World Sports and the pinnacle of a huge year of growth.

  • 2015

  • A big year all round Until this point, our website was lagging behind and we knew we could do better. Months of hard work resulted in a complete website relaunch which put us in the fast lane and would pave the way for all future success. Our sales were growing consistently each month at 80% up on the year previous and in this year alone our headcount doubled in size.

  • Things didn’t always go completely to plan With unprecedented demand on Black Friday 2015 (our biggest selling day of the year!) our checkout couldn’t handle the volume and it crashed. Never have 23 minutes felt longer at any time before! When things go wrong, and they do, we learn from it and do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

  • 2016

  • By now we’d relaunched websites in 6 different countries And we were constantly tweaking and updating them based on customer data and feedback.

  • Our ever-expanding team continued to grow with new recruits from as far afield as Italy and Moldova, as Angelo and Sergiu joined our web development department.

  • 2016

  • Our Office vs Warehouse football matches kicked off in style What used to be a 5-a-side shoot-out quickly became full-scale 11 against 11 clashes as our team continued to expand at rapid pace.

  • 2016

  • Because a staff party just at Christmas isn’t quite enough We kicked off our first annual summer party… Olympics themed. 3-legged races and assault courses came with medals for the winners, not too dissimilar to the real thing in Rio!

  • 2016

  • Finishing the year on a high Not only did we reach the finals of the prestigious National Business Awards, we also rocketed into The Sunday Times Fast Track 100. The league table ranks UK’s fastest growing businesses, of which we placed 45th overall and 2nd in Wales. An equally momentous milestone came when we made the decision to purchase our warehouse and office site outright. This trebled our warehouse capacity to 120,000sq ft … though we don’t really know how long it will be before we’re once again running out of room. To truly finish the year on a high, in December of 2016 we broke the £2m barrier for monthly sales. What a year.

  • 2017

  • After purchasing our site at the end of 2016, this year has been all about office expansion With space for 70 new desks and 4 new meeting rooms we’re paving the way for future growth. Unfortunately, this will probably only last till next year but by now running out of space is something we’re pretty used to!

  • Welcoming at least 1 new person to our team every single week, as of June 2017 our headcount stands at 83.

  • Adding a whole host of new products to our FORB golf range Joining our hitting mats and practice cages were putting mats, golf balls, tees, ball markers and more, everything a player needs to get to the top of the leaderboard.

  • 2017

  • Donning our finest attire We picked up the first ever ‘International Trading Business of the Year’ trophy at the inaugural North Wales Business Leaders Award.

  • 2017

  • The awards keep on coming Having been very much under the radar for many years, there’s no coming back after being announced as the only company to be featured in three of the 2017 Sunday Times FastTrack league tables! We were placed in FastTrack 100, ProfitTrack and ExportTrack.

  • 2017

  • FORZA goals score FA approval Our FORZA Alu60 and Alu110 goals were put through their paces and passed strict independent safety testing to land us on the list of FA approved suppliers.

  • Ryan Giggs, Luis Figo and Steven Gerrard found the back of the net with our FORZAs when our FORZA Alu60 goals and ball stop netting system earned a call-up to the floating football pitch used as part of the festivities at the UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff.

  • 2017

  • We went through a complete rebrand, including new logo, colour scheme and website design. Our fresh, modern look visualises the brand perfectly without losing any key links to our heritage.
