If you’re looking to purchase a new basketball hoop but you’re unsure about how high a basketball hoop should be, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve created this comprehensive guide which includes a hoop height graphic to ensure you have all the information you need.

It’s important to get a basketball hoop that’s the correct height, so that children don’t become discouraged and demotivated by using one that is too high, or too low and therefore too easy to use. It also helps players to build shooting skills at home or at practice, and directly transfer those skills into a regulation game.

How tall is a basketball hoop?

Regulation basketball hoops used throughout America have a standard height of 10 feet (3.05 meters) from the ground. That is the official height of hoops for all players aged 12 or older, meaning players ranging from school children to NBA superstars use a 10 feet high hoop.

This has been the standard height of basketball hoops since the game’s inventor, James Naismith, set up the first hoop by hanging a basket on top of the railings around a running track in 1891.

With that said, the recommended height of a basketball hoop does vary depending on the age of the players. Players under the age of 12 use a hoop that is lower to make it easier for them to score, making the game much more enjoyable and allowing them to develop proper shooting technique.

The image below shows the recommended basketball hoop height by age. If you already have a basketball hoop this shows you how high it should be, or if you’re looking to buy a new hoop this gives you an idea of the height it should be placed.

Using the correct height hoop for practice will mean that shooting skills developed in training will transfer more easily to competitive games. If you use a 10ft basketball hoop in practice for example, but the regulation height for your age is 9ft, you may have to adjust your shooting technique during regulated games.

If you wish to check the height of a basketball hoop that you already own, you will need to place a tape measure level with the front tip of the rim and drop the tape measure down to the playing surface. To do this safely you will need two people and a step ladder.

Basketball Hoop Dimensions

What is the diameter of a basketball hoop?

Regulation size hoops, including official NBA size basketball hoops, have a diameter of 18 inches (46cm). The standard diameter of a basketball rim is the same for all senior-level games, including high school and competitive men’s and women’s games.

Children’s hoops that aren’t 10 feet high can sometimes have rims with a smaller ring diameter. As younger children also typically use smaller basketball balls the smaller hoop doesn’t necessarily make it harder to score.

What is the standard basketball backboard size?

In the NBA, the regulation dimensions for a basketball backboard are 48 inches tall by 72 inches wide (122cm x 183cm or 3.5 feet x 6 feet). NBA regulations also state that the front surface of the backboard should be flat and transparent, with a 2 inch white rectangle marked out centrally that is 18 inches vertically and 24 inches horizontally.

For children’s basketball hoops and other hoops that are designed for recreational use the requirements aren’t as strict, with backboard sizes and designs varying depending on the make and model of the hoop.
