What is a rash guard?
Whether you are a poolside sun bather or a seasoned surfer, paddle boarder or kayaker, you have probably heard of the term rash guard or at least seem someone wearing one. This versatile piece of clothing has become increasingly popular in recent years due to their many benefits.
In this comprehensive guide, we will dive into the world of rash guards, covering what they are, reason to wear them, key features and how to choose the right one to best suit your needs.
- Abrasion resistant: They help to prevent skin rashes and irritation, which can be caused by friction from surfboards, wetsuits and sand, hence the name “rash guard”.
- UV protection: Many rash guards, including our AquaTec range have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which shields your skin from UV rays.
- Comfort: Rash guards are known for their comfort and flexibility. Whether worn alone or with a wetsuit.
- Temperature regulated: Some rash guards have thermal lining inside which provides warmth in cooler waters.
Do rash guards keep your warm?
Depending on what rash guard you get, they may provide some form of warmth. Their main purpose is to protect your skin from UV rays, abrasion and jellyfish stings. However, in some cases, a rash guard can offer warmth:
Wearing layers: Many people opt to wear a rash guard under their wetsuit for additional warmth to protect against colder water/weather temperatures.
Thermal rash guards: Some rash guards are designed for warmth and are made with thicker insulating material like neoprene. These can offer more warmth when in cooler climates.
Whilst rash guards can offer some additional warmth, they aren’t a direct replacement for a wetsuit and won’t provide the same level of warmth in cooler waters.
Do rash guards protect you from the sun?
Whether you are relaxing on the beach or in the water, it can be very easy to get sunburnt without even realizing it’s happening due to the temperature of the water and/or breeze on the beach. Most rash guards are made using polyester which builds UV protective properties. Rash guards with a 50 UPF will block 98% of harmful UV rays, significantly reducing the risk of getting sunburn. Even with the added sun protection of rash guards, it is still important to use sunscreen to maximize protection from the sun.
Are rash guards supposed to be tight?
Rash guards are made from a special blend of materials. If you have ever owned a rash vest, you will notice that they are stretchy, flexible and durable. Rash guards materials include spandex, which gives it the stretchy feel, nylon for the durability and quick drying properties and polyester for UV protection.
- Fit close to the skin: A snug fit keeps the rash guard in place during activities without getting bunched up or riding. This helps to reduce water flowing underneath, reducing drag and increasing warmth.
- Freedom of movement: While snug, a rash guard should not restrict your arms, shoulders or torso. It should allow you to move around without chafing or irritation.
- Comfortable feel: The collar should be comfortable and not tight, the sleeves should fit without being loose or too tight, and the length should cover your torso.
What to wear under a rash guard?
The answer to this question differs for men and women. Most men opt not to wear anything under their rash guard, whilst women will typically wear a bikini top, bathing suit or sports bra depending on personal preference.
