The reason why different size water polo balls are used is because the size and weight of a water polo ball can have a major impact on player performance and enjoyment. Not using the correct ball size can result in an increased risk of injury, reduced control, hindered progress, improper technique and player frustration.
For this reason, it’s important to know what size water polo balls should be used by kids and adults. Players aged 8 and under should use size 1 balls, boys aged 8-10 and girls aged 8-12 should use size 2 balls, boys aged 10-12 and girls aged 12-14 should use size 3 balls, boys aged 12-14 and girls aged 14+ should use size 4 balls, and boys aged 14+ should use size 5 balls.
You may see a few variations in the measurements and weights of size 1, 2 and 3 balls. These sizes do not have regulation guidelines from World Aquatics and the measurements can fluctuate depending on the manufacturer and model. However, size 4 and 5 balls have strict guidelines which are set, meaning there is less leeway in weight and circumference.
From high school, through to college and elite competitions like the Olympics, female players will use a size 4 water polo ball and male players will use a size 5 ball.
What are water polo balls made of?
Water polo balls are made using an internal bladder typically made from latex or rubber and a rubber/neoprene exterior that is typically yellow to help with visibility. They are designed to be water resistant and buoyant to keep them afloat. The balls are known to be very durable and able to withstand the rigors of playing in water, including the exposure to chlorine.
Are water polo balls sticky?
Water polo balls are firm and have some similarities to a basketball. What sets water polo balls apart is the texture of the ball which enhances grip whilst in the water, making it easier for players to maintain control. The tacky feel of water polo balls in water is down to the textured covering on the balls which is designed specifically for wet conditions. Without this sticky/tacky grip it would be extremely challenging to handle the balls in the water.
